Study materials

My thesis aims to enhance the understanding of Business English within the Irish context. It focuses on the lexical features of the Academic Research in Ireland Corpus (ARIC) and includes corpus-informed, context-specific teaching materials for your immediate classroom use.

There you have it, the worksheets designed to facilitate language activities based on the lexical analysis of ARIC. They are available for download and can be used freely in your classroom or research, serving as templates for creating similar activities.

Here is how it works

The worksheets are structured around key lexical features identified in this study:

    1. Vocabulary: Activities to help students acquire frequent content words and keywords in context.
      2. Collocations: Focuses on the most common collocations of the top 50 content words.
      3. Lexical Clusters: Encourages awareness and acquisition of the top fifty-four word clusters.
      4. Genre: Combines genre elements with specific language instruction based on texts extracted from the corpus.

Lexical Approach

These materials are designed to promote a lexical approach by:

  • Organising activities around the 50 most frequent lexical features.
  • Presenting corpus-derived features in their original Business English context through Key Word In Context (KWIC) examples.
  • Highlighting lexical chunks, including bundles/clusters and collocations.

I hope you and your students find these inspiring!
